Gearbox Oil Supprise....
Did 2 good jobs today.

Firstly changed my front brake pads to match the new rear shoes so I’m now on fully renewed brakes which should start making a difference as they bed in.
Quite nice to have a simple start and finish job once again.

The gearbox oil also desperately needed changing as it has been running on ATF after I incorrectly filled it (thank you Haynes manual…) now correctly filled with MTF94 however it did give me a little concern…
While draining the old fluid I removed the gearbox filter which was quite clean; however there was a metallic “clunk” that dropped into the drain bucket.
Looks to me, like a roll pin. Which is slightly worrying as if it is, it shouldn’t be loose.
Does anyone know if Land Rover used roll pins in gearboxes or were they were keyed?
Overall the gearbox is now smoother and less resistant so the change has done good, but still have that nag at the back of my mind thinking, where did it come from?

Gearbox is an LT77S.

Not sure on a LT77S gearbox but i once owned a RRC (or two) and the selector forks were held on the selector shaft by roll pins about 3mm diameter.
I had one snap one day and had to replace it and dropped the new one into the gearbox and never got it out !
If your gearbox is all working OK i wouldnt worry about it.
IIRC the LT77 gearbox does run ATF. 2005 Td5 90 XS

ATF is the correct oil for an LT77.

The LT77S is a completely different gearbox to the LT77 though, more of an experimental R380.

They were originally spec'd with ATF but found that it was liable to overheating and couldn't take the pressures put through it so rover came up with MTF94 which is higher viscosity and could take the higher pressure.

If your just cruising around with no real weight its not a problem but when your doing heavier work or towing there is a greater chance of it overheating.

The Haynes book of suggestions says use ATF fluid but every Land Lover mechanic I have ever spoken to has recommended using MTF94.

The only reason it had ATF in it was because I had to do an emergency oil change on holiday and it was all I could find as someone had previously filled it with ATF before I had it Rolling Eyes

Just a bit dubious about the missing roll pin, but its a hell of a pain to dig out the gearbox to find out what the risk is.
