Yes, have done a few...
Drill rivets out, send checker plate strip off for powder coating. Fit Rivnuts into the side step, then it's just a simple job using some nice pan head stainless steel bolts to re-attached the checker plate strip when done. I have one to do over the next week - so will try and remember to take photographs. Thanks.
Can you give an idea of cost? Would the strips be suitable to courier to you? Cheers |

Just do a Google for 'powdercoaters' in your area. Drop them off, collect a couple o' days later, no more than £10 - £20 perhaps? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

As K9F has said, have a look for a local powdercoaters... just make sure they know what they are doing with aluminium. Unless you local to the Midlands? Or did you want to send steps complete? Rather than starting a new thread I thought I would jump on this one.
Has anyone got any experience with the longevity of powder coating the chequer plate tops on the 110 tubular side step rails? Does it last or does the powder coating wear through? Equally has anyone got any suggestions for better alternatives or are the OEM steps the best quality? Proud owner 110 Utility XS Ex RR Sport HST V8 Ex Td5 90 |

In my experience, the powder coating of steps doesn't last for ever. Normally about 18 months before it looks tatty to the point if requiring action! An engine to TDi for!

As with everything Landrover related your best off buying new and painting the outside properly, waxing the inside and undersealing/dinitrol etc the underneith, back and brackets (basically anything that can't be seen or is likely to get a lot of exposure) before the parts ever see driving conditions, then it's likely to last. In answer to the froogle one.
Standard steps of the genuine style are all generally the same and will flake and rot out unless you maintain them. Best OE style ones are the ones I had on my soft top, they look exactly the same but were stainless. I painted them as they come mirror polished which was a bit shiny for my liking. They worked out cheaper than genuine ones and will outlast the car/ chassis by a long way. None on at the moment but keep a look on ebay as thats where they sold them from, the company usually makes vw van stainless runners. Click image to enlarge |

I had an original set swapped out under warranty just before the three year point. The second set I recently sold were on for about the same period but the vulnerable area that sits just in front of the rear wheels I protected with some self adhesive antenna protector which prevented impact damage to the powdercoating. You may just be able to see in the picture. On removal it was the top of the brackets that had signs of the powdercoating 'throwing it's hand in.'

Guess one option would be really big heat shrink over the impact areas front and rear of the step

Thanks for the feedback chaps - much appreciated!
The Masai treads are an interesting option and probably add some practicality. That said I do like the look of the Masai tree sliders as another option. http://www.masai4x4.com/#!/Tree-Sliders-fo...ory=821985 Proud owner 110 Utility XS Ex RR Sport HST V8 Ex Td5 90 |

Has anyone got the Masai Tubular Steps fitted on a 110?
http://www.masai4x4.com/#!/Fire-and-Ice-st...ory=821985 Any photos and more importantly any comments on the quality / durability? At £310 they feel a little pricey Proud owner 110 Utility XS Ex RR Sport HST V8 Ex Td5 90 |

So five years ago my local stealership was clearing out some old stock and for the same as £30 I got a full set of Disco II passenger and rear load mats with a set of chrome plated side steps for a Defender 110. These I have just fitted to my new Defender. They are much better than the standard and are "flattened" on the underside. I have never seen these on any other Defender110 but they are an original part, that is slightly lower and wider than the black painted, factory fitted ones the vehicle came with.
