![]() Had a 10p off voucher for Shell Nitro+ Diesel so chugged into the petrol station running on vapours and filled up. Paid 96 quid in the end. Maybe not such a bargain. Especially in light of the price fixing that's is alleged to have occurred. Together with my £490.00 road tax you can bet your ass I will be driving like I own the bleedin' road 'cos I'm bleedin' well payin' for it! |

I find sansburys to be the best and cheapest, BP near me is a rip off i once held the nozzle out and after 10pence had been taken then the fuel started dispensing

Egghead, I do hope you did not use your mobile phone to take the picture on a fuel forecourt. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

Just thinking out loud here... I thought the petrol tanks in a 2.4 Puma were possibly 75 litres (think I read it on here somewhere) so perhaps I had quite a few more miles left yet seeing as she only took 68.37 litres. I'm not in the habit of draining her dry before filling up but I figured it best to use up as much of the "regular" low-sulphur muck as possible to reap the benefits of this "nitro+" or "super" fuel or whatever such they want to call it.
Hope the claimed fuel price fixing has boosted my shares over the years. They are bound to take a thumping now, so I can probably forget about dividends yet again!

Not sure if this is an urban myth , I have never seen any sparks coming off my mobile phone ? There are of course good reasons not to be talking on a phone when fuelling a car, concentrating on what you are doing would be a high priority. |

The myth came about in the early days of CB radio, when you could key up, and the pumps would stop registering how much fuel you were putting in the tank.. A friend of mine had a Tristar 777 in his Ford Cortina Mk1, and used to get "free" fillups all the time.. ![]() It doesn't work now though!!! ... ,-------, .. I [__][_]|__ .. I __ |"_|"__| .. There are signs on all forecourts stating that mobile phones are not to be used, which I believe is due to a fear of ignition of petrol fumes. However, Top Gear pretty much shot that down in flames (excuse the pun) a few years ago when they filled a caravan with open petrol cans and mobile phones and couldn't get any reaction at all.
That hasn't changed the rule, though. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

I was told that the fear was that if a phone was dropped, the battery could disconnect and that would cause a spark.

WRT the Top Gear episode, they opened so many fuel cans and saturated the air with fuel vapaours it wouldn't ignite. You need the correct ratio to initiate a burn.
A bit like your car, if you run rich the engine runs poorly, think if you then pumped more fuel in and less air it would run even worse or not at all. 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

This is in part true. There was, and still is, also the real concern should a broadcast antenna be used close enough to surrounding earthed metalwork it may cause a spark from the antenna to the metal which might, just might, ignite any fuel vapour in the immediate surroundings. It's a bit like the electrical devices ban on aircraft at take off and landings... the rule exists so it has to be followed (and boy do some like enforcing it!) however the danger is rather minimal. Wouldn't like to be responsible if I caused the one occurrence when disaster struck though.
I suppose it is ok to whip out a digital camera and take a photo in a garage forecourt though? No broadcast antenna in one of those. |
