Matt,

Based on the eBay description, it claims to have both voice and movement detection, so sounds like it is the right one.

Also, I looked on the Android App Store and there are a number of apps to control the TK102 trackers, so will try one of those.

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon,

I fear "movement alert" in the listing is referring to movement of the vehicle away from parked position (a bit like geofencing but in any direction) and not vibration sensing. I got confused between "movement alert" and "vibration alert" - not used to reading English "translations" Embarassed

As I said, it was only when looking at all the UK ones that I realised there was a difference. Some have "voice surveillance", some "vibration sensor", and some both. If you've ordered one with only voice surveillance, you might want to change the order and go for vibration sensor (IMHO more useful). After a wider search, this one appears to have both "movement" and "vibration" in the text:

Sorry if that's a bit garbled... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Thanks for looking into this Matt.

I'll wait to see what arrives, I'm thinking I might install 2 units anyway so if the first one doesn't have the voice and vibration function, I can find one that does.

Cheers

BUT....... That said- something is better than nothing and the majority of thieves out there don't know much about communications or trackers.

I think that's the point - a "well-educated", resourceful, determined thief will be able to get past anything. I believe "investing" £150 quid gets you a VHF jammer too, or PM me for plans...no, no, that was a joke Shocked
It's all about layered protection.

Yes, but do searches on most tracker devices- 99% of them are UHF. You will find that many thieves are now all carrying £30 UHF jammers- it makes sense to pay £30 for protection against 99% of trackers, where several hundred pounds to protect you from 1% of trackers would be ignored.

Do you want an active or dormant device?

Well, if the thief has a signal detector it is better to have a dormant device as he will search- think you haven't got anything but then once moving the device will switch on and boom- you are tracking him without him knowing. On the other hand he detects you are using GPS and A. He will give up and walk away or B. he will know exactly what he needs to do to protect himself from your tracker.

Do you want a centrally controlled device?

Well, if it is a central one you pay monthly if your car moves they call you and ask if it should be- you say no and they contact the police and guide them onto your vehicle. Most of these companies are now fully integrated into the Police system and have direct lines to them. You will also get a discount off your insurance. Most of these companies will then have someone who will look after your vehicle and escort it back to you after.

Yes, these other systems will cost you £400+ for the first year and then another £100 a year after......... but that is about 1% the value of your vehicle for the first year and then 0.25% of your vehicle for each year after.

It has been pointed out on another thread how stupid it is that people spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds trying to increase the MPG of their Defenders........ But this thread is all about people refusing to spend hundreds (not even thousands) of pounds to protect their Defenders even thought they are currently the 4th most stole vehicle in the UK.

Also..... are anyone on here using DATATAG or something similar?

I have been MASSIVELY chilled out with my security over the past few years as I have lived in Paderborn, Germany and Cyprus where the car crime rate is zero- but as my drive back to the UK is closing in I have been looking into security more and more and I will 100% be spending in the region of £1000 in the first month on security devices/ tracker..... it is a no-brainer (and once that money is spent I won't have to spend another penny for 12 months).

I wouldn't forgive myself if my Defender went and never re-appeared all because I wanted to save a few quid on security.

Wise words Glyn.

As I currently have five Defenders my security spend has been massive in the last month or so (I was responsible for half the group buy target on the Skytags single handedly - although I'm pleased to report forum take up has exceeded expectations !)
I've also fitted all five with the Xeng steering lock shroud and where appropriate the other Xeng security devices (R380 gear lever lock etc)

The peace of mind this has all bought, knowing my babies are as safe as I can make them, is priceless !

Glynn - I agree with all of that but it's better to have something than nothing Rolling Eyes

Defender crime here too is minimal but I also have to drive to "dodgy" areas in Europe.
I also have the biggest Ultima steering lock as a visual deterrent (at least a measly 2 minute protection), ignition barrel lock, double backed up alarm, additional ECU immobiliser and various other tricks. The tracker is GPS dormant until there is vibration and then it immediately sends you an alarm SMS (whether or not it has a GPS fix). Maybe that is worth something, maybe not. I'm not pretending it's bombproof. Anything can be found/blocked/removed etc.

It's just about stopping opportune theft, maybe determined theft and vaguely possibly towing away by professional Defender thieves who can steal, strip and sell the car parts on eBay before the VHF signal has reached Mission Control. Or rather it's just about hoping something works Big Cry

I absolutely agree that SKYTAG is the holy grail of all vehicle protection systems and that everyone on this forum should have at least 2.

However, in my naivite, please let me believe a common pathetic UHF tracker will work in a lot of cases. Now shoot me down if you can catch me - I'm off to "Joke of the day" to calm down Wink Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

It's not the holy grail and you're tracker is as good as and in many ways better than Skytag Thumbs Up

And I do agree that everyone should buy two Skytags Rolling with laughter Bow down

Yes, something is better than nothing.

OK, I have owned my Defender for 3.5 years- in that time I have lived in Germany and Cyprus. In Germany I locked it when about in town etc (standard LR alarm). In Cyprus I only lock it when about in town again- and on many occasions I have even forgot to do that Embarassed But she has always been there when I have got back. For this reason I have never needed to upgrade the system I have.

If I were to keep living in areas like this I would probably just slowly upgrade the system as I went along (I now have bonnet security and backup sounder on the alarm). and in time yes I would probably end up with a cheap tracker system like you have fitted.

BUT, I am heading back to the UK (hopefully not for too long before I escape again). There is a considerable threat to the Defender there so you have to up the protection. If I were to move to some of the Defender blackspots I would probably rent a garage which would then be beefed up even more after- but for general UK I would take the basic steps- X-Eng barrel sleeve, pedal lock, steering wheel cover and professional tracker. The same would go for if I were to visit 'dodgy' areas on a regular basis.

Skytag is awesome....... as a basic entry level tracker. Again it is just UHF- so it can be beat by the same cheap device that would render a £10 ebay special car tracker useless. In this world you need the device that has something the normal security device hasn't got- that means the thieves are less likely to know about it and more likely to result in you getting your vehicle back.

I have to admit that even with all the security I'm tempted to rent something to tour Scotland later this Summer - ridiculous shame though Sad

Going back to the Ashford raid, it would be interesting to know what kind of tracker the Subaru had fitted and how long it took plod to find it... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

TBH although Defenders are stolen in the UK, as a proportion of the number of them that are on the road it probably amounts to a very small risk.

Anyway, for anyone that wants to beta test an iPhone app to control one of these trackers, you can join the test team here...
http://tflig.ht/WW5HOC

Once you've registered your device I'll add it to the list of authorised devices and you'll be able to download the app on your phone.

After I've tarted the UI up a bit I'll submit it to the app store. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Sorry for not fully reading this thread, but is the device at the start a stand alone unit (with regard to cost) or is there a subscription payable? Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

It's stand alone, there is no subscription.

Ongoing though there are the costs associated with a Pay as you go SIM which will vary depending on how many texts you get it to send.
