Well this is proving to be a closer fought battle than I thought Confused

Defender just edging ahead on the poll at the moment and it's the sensible choice for cash flow and residuals. Disco wins hands down in load area and comfort but at a price.

Lots of good comments so far, keep them coming. Thumbs Up

Just been through a similar battle in my house too, and the D4 won. Although I went down a lot of other avenues to get there.

I have an ageing D3, which has just had the big 105, and brakes. I have a very tidy Td5 90 CSW with some lovely new tyres.

I thought about selling the D3 and buying a Aston Martin Vantage, second hand for about 35k. However, this was my heart calling, and I definitely am having a mid-life-crisis tendency. My thought was that the 90 would act as my everyday 'practical' car, leaving the Aston for sunny weekends.

However, I took a look at the Aston, and yes it is drop dead gorgeous, and it makes the best noise in the universe (especially with fuse 22 pulled !!) but I was put off by a cheap interior and fragile cramped feel to it.

Thought about just keeping the D3 and buying a cheap sportscar, but then I thought hang on a minute, what do I value most? and the answer is dependability. I am just about to set off to the Alps in the D3, and am quite looking forward to eating the continent in a day. The same could not be said of the TD5 90!

So, I have a D4 HSE Lux on order, yes its going to cost me a lot of money, yes its big and bling, but yes I am keeping the 90, and lets not forget the love of my life, Betsy, who is hiding in the garage, quietly sniggering at all these modern Land Rovers that come and go with incredible regularity.

If I did not do so many miles, a 110 would be considered. I think they are incredible vehicles, and I have driven the 2.2, it is a great engine (not quite as pleasing as a TD5 IMO) but the lack of elbow room and other comfort compromises make just a bit impracticable for my needs.

You already have the Defender in your life, and I think you might still have a Series? so go the whole hog and get the D4 Thumbs Up 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Cheers Gareth. When you and Andrew both say D4 that carries a lot of weight Thumbs Up

There's a 110 2.2 USW demo at yeovil that I can take for an extended blast. I think I need to remind myself that while a 110 will do it, there's a reason our main mileage car is a discovery. I may surprise myself but the D4 is just edging ahead in my head at the moment.

Now you're talking Thumbs Up Build date set for the 19th.

The thing that amazed me, having just sold my 110 to make way for a 90, was the depreciation on a Defender.
I lost £5K for the four years of ownership of my 110, would probably have been less if I could have been bothered to carry on waiting for a better offer.

Probably as a company purchase this will not matter that much with write down etc but as a private owner it does make a massive difference.

ND, if you are dealing with who I think you are and got a better discount than me I shall be down there to sort them out Laughing

Good luck with whatever you decide to purchase Thumbs Up

Bob
i'd say D4 as thats my choice and a 90 csw as a laner. But 110s are great if you do some sensible mods.

Bob 5k in 4 years is a good result i've offered mine at a decent price and have been bid down quite a bit so it'll be staying. Even if thats in the garage for 6 months.

D4 commercial is manual I presume. Is your D3?

If I was stuck for choice, I'd go for an auto, if its in your equation.

Do D3 diesels have DPFs? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Nope, all D4s are auto. My D3 also an auto. DPF on all diesels now to meet EU5, but at 20,000 miles a year risk of dpf problems a bit lower (I hope) Rolling Eyes

Andrew, I'd need to do a 5 point turn to get a 130 out of my drive. The 90 just makes it and a 110 needs a bit of a shuffle Whistle

I keep thinking the same thing. I had a D3 which was fantastic, then got a 110 because I only use it for work and can get vat back etc. I keep thinking D4 commercial which are brilliant to drive and are better on the mpg. The main draw back to me is its a lot of money for only two seats. If you get a normal D4 the tax is massive so that rules it out for me.

So when it was time to change the 110 I went for a 90. I find it a good all rounder and easy to get trailers and chippers where we need them. But have itchy feet as would like something with more power and comfort. Could the new defender offer this, I do hope so.

Just drove from Yeovil to Bovington on rain soaked roads in a 2013 USW. Seems there's a new accessory for such journeys

I've got frikkin' tinitus!

Ride comfort fine - I can live with that. But Jesus, the noise! Big Cry
