South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
I just spent five hours fitting the intercooler with the help of a friend, after I was advised by some people (no Regard and jst, I am not pointing fingers) that it was a 2-hour job Smile

My advice: get it fitted by an indie.

On the plus side, I took a drive to Stellenbosch and back and now instead of looking for a 7th gear, it feels like the landy needs an 8th gear as well! --

glad its in ok. but 5hrs (or 10 man hours) really??? i did mine in 2hrs on my own with no specific prior knowledge. Cheers

That's a nice bit of road from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek a good climb to test the intercooler Thumbs Up

Ya ya...

First, one of the screws holding the grille was stripped. That should have been our first clue to give up right there and take it to a pro. But no, we decided to press on.

Then we struggled to get the metal bar holding the hood latch off, since we had to bend it at one end to get it out.

Once we got the old IC off, we tried to put the new one in, and then realised it wasn't fitting. Had to saw off bits on the radiator, as Regard said.

Then we struggled to get the new IC in, the air hoses being a bit short and oily, and clipping it also a mission, since the half-moon for the IC pipes did not align properly.

Once that was done, we then started bolting things back and again, we had a fun time putting the hood latch bar back in, a hammer was eventually procured for this purpose.

When we were done, we found ourselves with the following extras: one long bolt (from the hood latch centre plate, which does not align any more), a rubber mount (which we think should have gone on the lower clip IC-radiator) and a plastic clip (unknown origin) left over.

The front grill is now a bit skew, the bonnet is also a bit skew, and this morning I see that the IC has dropped a few cm from the radiator on the driver's side. At least the bonnet closes.

All in all, not worth the effort. Last time I listen to you people and your 'it's a simple 2 hour job' advice Rolling Eyes --

I intend to take it to my trusted indie for a refit.

We had to take the latch plate out to get the old IC out, there was no other way that we could see, since the aircon radiator did not move out much, nor did the radiator? --

i based my thoughts on my experience and expertise and the time it had taken me. i fail to understand how you had so many issues and it took so long. i cant apologise for this as i cant see how it happened. i am sorry its not an experience you enjoyed. i do believe alot of people send vehicles for work to be completed to the garage when there is a simple/easy no/low cost option of doing it themselves. i was only tying to help. your point is taken. Cheers

No need for apologies, it's all in good faith. Everyone's advise here is appreciated, after all, this is what the forum is about. And I did learn how to do it Thumbs Up

I was just a bit miffed expecting to be done, with a cold beer in my hands by the time SWAMBO came home. I'm still amazed that she took one look at us, didn't throw a fit and Censored off with a bottle of wine Rolling with laughter --

But you should have removed those 2 nuts and threaded pins on one side of the latch plate and then just "slide out" the latch plate Whistle

Anyway....
