is it possible (even normal) to be able to go from high to low ratios without crunching the gears?

Never done it that way round but I was taught to go from low to high on the fly by double de-clutching, useful when towing very heavy loads.

its always amazed me how the heck you can go from low to high when pulling a heavy load without either rolling backwards by the time you've done a smooth change....
or alternatively trashing the box ?? |

yes here also
noticed that it is not the fact if you are moving or not that makes a huge difference (within limits of course) but the fact if there are forces on your drivetrain (car is accelerating or decelerating) that makes a big difference to me in getting a crunch. When coasting it is much more gentle. When not moving i most of the time don't mesh (so dont engage completely) and have to drive the gearbox of bit by engaging clutch or getting of the brake so car starts rolling. ![]() |

I get what you're saying! Firstly, I normally only ever change from low to high (or vice-versa) when at a stand still. 50% of the time, it just does it. The other 50%, I have the car in gear and lift the clutch until it does just drop in, and normally never without any crunching. This has always been my personal approach with all Defenders I have owned/driven and coincidentally was how the knowledgable Land Rover Experience instructor showed me how to do it. Though I remember when teaching my daughter how to drive her Defender, the transfer box would always change without any problem and I was most put out that I couldn't demonstrate the 'knack' which I (and I suspect many others) use. hmm.
just gonna pop out and see if its any different following replacement part on transfer box along with the new clutch..... not quite sure what the dealer was on about but on one hand they were saying the clutch had shattered springs......on the other they were suggesting even so it was ok and didn't need changing (hows that work)? |

wow.
just popped out and hey presto piece of cake. can more from hi low and back easily (albeit I was stationary) just as you'd expect (or hope). so can only assume the new clutch and spline have made a significant difference? ....in fact changed from hi / low so well I'm almost thinking something must be wrong!? |

The way things have been going with the gearbox recently it's possible the lever isn't connected ![]() I did have a look at one at Nene when I bought my 110 and the h/l lever wasn't connected to anything (I think you'd know though ![]() Glad it's working for you ![]() Dj 1989 200tdi 90 csw 2011 110 usw Orkney grey Buy British 🇬🇧 Defender Clothing Designs available at http://www.rangesports.com/acatalog/Defender-Stuff.html |

this was covered a while back but i cant find the thread now.
hi - low is best done at a standstill, engine running with it in gear, clutch in, then as above, use the clutch, whilst applying gentle pressure to the hi/low lever to allow eveything to align. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
