Take it back to the dealers again and again until they find the cause.
Sounds like low compression on one or more cylinders. White smoke that hangs in the air is unburnt diesel, white smoke that disperses rapidly is steam. |

Surely this is just condensation in the exhaust burning off? Craig Rogers

This doesn't sound right!
Request a Compression test as well as a CO2 test on your coolant. |

If you're getting an unburnt diesel smell when cold I'd be inclined to think along the lines of a Td5, check the heater plug circuit and if they are all working. With the Td5 there is 1 cylinder that is not fed with a glow plug and it might be your 4cyl is boost fuelling for a cold start which is taking longer to combust as it isn't getting a helping hand from a glow plug.

The Tdci engines tend to overfuel at start up, and it chuck out smoke at start up, and it stinks. Worse that the Td5.

Agreed mine does this every winter just overfuelling on a cold start I'd say, fairly smooth so I don't think a glow plug is down. Jonno |

My 57 plate was terrible in the cold, could not see the trailer in the mirrors on a cold morning untill the temp guage just started to lift then clear, mine always did it so never worried. On very cold mornings it looked realy bad. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The EMS sets the fuelling in the cylinders by using the CHT. When the engine head temp is low the EMS compensates by putting more fuel into the cylinder and as such if a glow plug was on its way out you would get the symptoms you describe as that cylinder won't have fired before the others. If the temp is close to zero and you start the Puma without waiting on the glow plugs, you will get a plume of white smoke due to un-burnt fuel.

Mine does tooo ....... but only for 10 - 15 seconds or so. Sounds like a glow plug issue to me too Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

When the Puma engine is cold and you descent down a road without any acceleration this is a kind of "normal" situation. I have seen this phenomenon especially in winter time when my TD4 parked through the night at around -15°C and heading down to a valley the next morning. The smell is auwfully but once you accelerate for about 1-2 minutes the engine runs regular again with no more smoke.

It's a dodgy fuel injector.. Just had this same issue on my wife's ford focus tdci..
Other symptom is slight rough running when cold. Alex |
