What licence do you hold

Good evening all,

Just out of interest what sort of licences do all you chaps hold. A few recent trailer threads about smaller trailers has made me think 'Could I survive without having trailers on my licence!' and come out with a straight out NO. I tow all sorts of trailers all the time of all weights of sizes. Fortunately the government paid for me to do my full C+E which automatically covers B+E.

I guess an extra £120 on top of driving licence is a bit more money but in my eyes the first time it is needed it would pay for itself- like helping a mate by hiring a trailer and picking a car up for them, moving house etc...... Just a handy sting to have on your bow.

Class B post 1997 isn't quite correct mate because it's not a NO to trailers only NOT over a 750KG MAM. So a small trailer is legally tow-able by a B class licence holder however a say 2000kg or car transporter trailer would not be allowed unless you have B+E entitlement or the pre 1997 licence which will automatically entitle you. âï¸âï¸God Bless the USA ðŸ‡¬ðŸ‡§ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸ âï¸âï¸

If we wanted to be really picky then your assertion isn't quite correct either as you can legally tow trailers over 750kg MAM (ie. braked ones) under certain conditions on a post-1997 B only license. But that's not for this topic.

I have a standard B license which I obtained in 2006, so limited in what I can tow. Been towing trailers since ever and been meaning to do the test for about the same amount of time, but it's a case of getting around to it and the cost!

I passed my test at 17 in 1999
Did my C1 at 25 then D1 at 27 then got my D1+E at 28 which upgraded my B to B+E automatically
all my tests were paid for by various employers or government.

I couldn't imagine my licence without being able to tow anything or drive a minibus or drive a 7.5 tonner legally all were very useful outside work at times. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

Yes 750Kg gross weight- the average 'small trailer' weighs in the region of 200Kg... therefore a load weight of about 550 which isn't much in the grand scheme of things.....

I guess also I was brought up on a farm so have been using trailers since about 10yo so is an every day thing where I guess never having one could raise the question- Why do I need one.

Glyn - I wasn't trying to pick holes in your post just stating that it is possible.

But you are right it isn't much at all really and certainly limits trailer type and size. But then again some of us i.e. me won't need anything bigger anyway so not really an issue. But if a job or similar requires heavier haulage or you really do need to tow larger then a large trailer would certainly be useful. Uploaded this:

BP - You can bet he will.

I have an interesting question though. Say you had a 110 on a post 1997 license (3.5T max vehicle weight) how would you come off with it FULLY loaded say full rack on and so on would that not be nudging the weight limit if not over? And then there's a 130?

It would be overladen anyway to exceed 3500KG - a standard 110 has a gross of only 3050KG. Assuming it is at max weight, your trailer would be limited to whatever would add up to 4250KG overall.

I have B&E and also Cat C - oddity is I can only a tow a 750KG trailer behind a lorry, I would have thought I could at least have towed 3500KG as per a car, but there you go...

I have to get my head around this as it sounds dodgy.

Say I only had a B licence.

My Defender weighs 2650Kg (and has a tow capacity of 3500KG).... so I can have a trailer up to 750Kg.

But if I use my missus's Feroza (Weighs 1500Kg) I can tow up to 1499Kg.

That is Fu*ked up!!!

Glad I can tow anything without having to worry about that chart

Good to have but I couldn't be a driver, I'm too much of a people person
