LR (not the dealer) were saying they would not replace my rusty standard steps last year so i purchased a set of F & I ones to do the swap myself. LR did replace the steps so I just replaced the new standard ones with the F & I and now another forum member has a brand new set of genuine LR side steps

Just out of interest, does anyone know if you can take the side steps apart? If you were to drill the Rivets for example? my Chequer plate is looking tired, and I think it would be more subtle if the Chequer was powdercoated black?

Yes you can, as I've done exactly that. I've had the main tubes galvanised and then both them and the chequerplate inserts powder coated. I've yet to reassemble them though. I'm not sure whether to use large rivets or to fit rivnuts in the tubes and bolt them on.

The rubber bit is actually a shaped pad that's sandwiched between the chequerplate and tube rather than an edging strip. Yes, that can be cleaned up and re-used. Darren

Rivnuts must be the way forward in my opinion. For ease of any future disassembly and the fact fastener heads will be a lot more aesthetically pleasing than rivets and you get a choice.

Yeah, that was kind of my thinking. I haven't looked at it yet but my only concern is whether I can fit rivnuts of an appropriate size in the existing holes. What I don't particularly want to do is have to start drilling them out now that it's all nicely coated. Darren

You really want to use M6 riv nuts, so you will have to drill the hole out to 9mm (well, about 8.  . You then then fit coated or stainless steel riv nuts - and use a M6 stainless button head bolt with a stainless steel washer.
I have just done Tim's (from mobilecentre) so if he is reading this, he might be kind enough to post as picture of the finished article.
