IIRC when I had company cars the lease company used to change them at 3mm. I'd change mine at no lower than 3mm though. John

3mm is reckoned to be the point at which traction really starts to tail off and aquaplaning becomes a big issue. On a 4x4 though, tyres have ceased to be useful a long way before 3mm....

Most new AT/MT tyres come with 1/2" of tread, which is about 13mm.

Yeah I have been driving around in clouds of dry salt dust for the last 4 days, and yesterday slushy salty roads Shocked It's now being used for work and daily school runs etc. Not worried EVERYTHING got another coating of ACF-50 etc 2 weeks ago and the underside is pretty bullet proof. Their is nothing exposed to the elements including the gearbox casing etc.

Out again in it this morning, the salt will be around for another week but a pressure wash down and more potions sprayed on will neutralise any remaining salt Thumbs Up Salt is a sod to get off, most of it doesn't come off with just rinsing. A lot of boat trailers now have built in pipes which are supposed to rinse your brakes Rolling Eyes waste of time!

You bent the 90 not your ICE Shocked Question

Legal min for a DPV is the same as for a car (and as has been mentioned once or twice before before as far as C&U is concerned the N1 thing has no relevance), so it is 1.6 mm tread depth over the centre 75% of the tread width around the circumference and "visible tread" on the remaining 25% of tread width.

Anyone who drives any vehicle with this little tread, let alone a 2.5+ ton 4x4, in my opinion, should be removed from the road permanently.

Personally I would never run a tyre on a Landrover below 6mm, and usually replace them at about 8mm to 10mm when they still have some traction and also still have some resale value.

I changed my BFG AT's at 4-5mm. Still managed to sell them on Gumtree for a few quid (£40 iirc) Thumbs Up

Agree traction seems to go off when 5mm or less - but also they are very old by then.

Also, as I normally get up to 80,000 miles on decent AT's, they're usually at least 5-6 years old by the time they get to 4-5mm...

I think my last BFG AT's would have exceeded 100,000 miles if I had run them down to the legal minimum. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Yes had an old tyre break up on me at 40mph. The whole tread just peeled off flapping round the turning wheel smashing up my whole wing around the wheel arch. Big Cry Was in an old SAAB where the wing overlaps half the wheel Sad

My tyres never seem to get the chance to get old enough to deteriorate, since I tend to do around 25k+ miles in a year they never get much beyond four years old if that.

Having said that, now my Series 1 gets used less the tyres on that (the fantastic Michelin XCL, what a shame it's no longer made) are quite old, but in excellent condition. UV radiation is what kills tyres, so if they are stored in the dark they will last a great deal longer than if they see daylight (one reason why a cover on the spare is a good idea). The S1 lives in a windowless garage, so no problems there.

I run BFG Muds by choice, and on my 200k-mile Disco 2 I will need to replace the second set quite soon. Like the first set that these replaced, they have done approx 100k miles and have more than 6mm remaining. These are the original style Muds (not KM2) and it will be interesting to see if the KM2s last as long.
