Hand brake drum shoes caked in oil!
While I have the rear off I am replacing the handbrake shoes and noticed a lot of oil, all apart and cleaned the drum and inside to remove oil.

I have now taken the back plate off to explore and see no oil leak.

Am I missing something and not noticed a seal to replace? Or is a desk occurrence and put back together with new brake shoes?

the oil would be leaking from the seal where the rear shaft comes out. I recall on a series at least there is a sort of catch bracket to leads any leaked oil out through a weep hole at the back of the back plate (front side from a vehicle perspective).

While obviously the seal should not be leaking and might need to be changed, it helps if the oil is effectively led to the outside rather than to soak the brake shoes.

It can also be that the vent is blocked and pressure is building up inside the transfer case.

There was an issue with early Pumas where the rear seal was leaking onto the handbrake. I recall I've seen the Service Bulletin on here. I don't think it was to replace the seal but something really simple and fast. Not sure if it worked though.

There was a seal recall - but also there's a felt washer behind the flange. oil leaks along the splines and is flung up the inside face of the drum onto the shoes - impressive you still had a handbrake with that much lube!

I'll follow that closely. My hand brake is pretty much useless if it's not on flat ground. Whistle Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

I recall reading somewhere that the felt washers were done away with and the threads were to be given a coat of some sort of sealant...but I still recall the seal kit and new drive flange (which is recommended you replace when doing the oil seal )coming with a felt washer..
My hb drum was well oiled as well and was surprised it still seemed to be doing the job, but i replaced ir with a disc conversion anyway..to me a far more practical solution as a handbrake..👍

just add some RTV to the felt and push it through. Then a bit more of RTV on top followed by the big washer and nut. That´s it. Puma 110" SW

Thanks for all the comments. I have fitted a new seal and new felt washer!

Everything has been cleaned so no oil at all, new brake shoes fitted.

I have loosened the 17mm nut but the cover is very tight over the new shoes and will only slide about 50%, do I gently tap it.

And transmission fluid changed while the tub is off!

The brake drum shouldn't be a tight fit over the shoes if everything is slackened off unless there is a big wear / corrosion lip on the drum.

I'd double check everything is correctly in position as a dragging handbrake can cause all sorts of seemingly unrelated problems - noises, vibrations, IIRC even gear changes etc.

Good luck
