I thought that my MPG had suddenly improved the other month before the penny dropped that the fuel tank float had got suck at the half way point…… Whistle

A refill seems to have fixed the issue……..

Sorry for the delay.

No black smoke at all not even under hard acceleration. Only on cold starts there is a puff of smoke - not black but grey kind of like unburnt fuel smell?

Not sure if it has a tune on it, but I doubt it, its pretty slow tops out at maybe 78-80mph in 5th and it definetly takes its time to get to 60.

I do notice that the EGR is deleted.


Luckily the fuel gauge does move so I can mostly trust it. Plus I am measuring MPG at the pump.


Any other thoughts where/what to look for?

I have a 2001 Td5 90, with FSH and 130K miles.

I don't have any problem getting 30mpg+ (UK mpg) if you drive as they were designed. I find the sweet spot 60 to 65 mph.
US mpg will be c20% less with all things being equal. #1 Series 2A
#2 1999 TD5
#3 2001 TD5 (current)

I’ve no experience with Td5 mpg but from your text it seems that your driving pretty much flat out, moderately loaded, so I’d be expecting mpg to be at the lower end of the scale.

I used to ride a motor bike and on a long trip to the south of France on their autoroute I was only getting 38 mpg, but was travelling at a continuous 75-80 mph - quite high for the machine. If I dropped my speed to 60-65 the economy would increase to around 62mpg, which was what was normal and much more comfortable, if a bit more boring.

My 110 auto does 20 generally but I’ve had 27 on a uk motorway, driven at its comfortable limit of around 60-65, not it’s actual limit of at least 90 ( it’s a non standard engine )

On another trip to France with our 3.2 litre car, we had an average of 31 mpg, that included plenty of high speed, but cruising at 80 mph on the autoroute. Back home it gets 25 mpg, but I’d expect to achieve 34 -36 mpg at a constant 65 on the autoroute, although that would be extremely dull and a waste of a rapid car!

Hello,
My 110 (stage 1 remap and Disco2 Transfer box) with wife, dog, me and camping gear did 1100 mixed miles @ 34 mpg (UK). That was mainly in the 60 - 70 mph range but with plenty of trips into the 70 - 80 range...

Have you checked how well your Landy freewheels..?? Have you got access to a laser thermometer to check/compare the heat of your disks after a drive..??

I will definitely do a test to see how well it freewheels.

While I agree cruising at higher speeds could be my loss in MPG I do want to make sure everything else i in good shape.

I have gone ahead and ordered a Nanocom. Based on what I have read on the forums for these TD5's it is an important tool to be able to see if everything is functioning as it should.

Plus Evil Elsie - your setup Stage 1 + Disco 2 TB is what I have been looking into. Once I can confirm everything is working as it should I will look into Stage 1 remaps - my Defender has a EGR delete but stock intercooler/stock replacement air filter/stock exhaust

Question which Stage 1 did you purchase?
And anything to look out for when looking for a Disco 2 TB? I see a 2000 V8 being parted out.

If you are running the standard transfer box ratio 55-60 mph is probably the best speed.

Even with a the 1.2 ratio 55-60 is a happy speed and should return approx 30 mpg UK.

I would suggest you consider a different transfer box ratio or a Roamer drive overdrive if you intend to do long journeys and want to reduce your fuel consumption.

Hello CJ - sorry for late reply....

Mine has an 'Alive' stage 1 remap - I can't recommend it enough, an absolute game changer..!!
Standard turbo and intercooler but the turbo boost dialled up to 1.2 bar (set on my Nanocom).
She gets up to 70mph quickly considering size/weight/aerodynamics 😀

I also add 2 stroke oil to my fuel @ 250:1 ratio. I'm positive that this helps...

1100 miles - mainly fast roads but a few traffic jams and some town/city driving returned 34.3 mpg (UK) = 28.5 mpg (US).

265/75 All Terrain tyres @ 33 psi.
EGR deleted.
175k miles.

I normally only use my td5 110 to tow a small 14’ aluminum boat to the cabin and back over the weekends. ( need the defender specifically to wade in 24” of water to launch the boat off of a beach)

Approx 400kms round trip doing between 110-115kph and get right around 10-10.5 liters/100km.
Truck normally loaded with wife, dog and gear and normally 50-100kg of construction supplies tied inside boat.ODO 170k km, R380, standard 1.4 TC, no tune, new GY Wranglers. ( owned for 9 years since 2015 and 96k km)
Recently deleted EGR and find it marginally more responsive and a better top end on the highway while towing ( less need to downshift to 4th on long hills on highway)

Your mileage may vary….?

Yep…member 343. I was hoping to attend last weekends event, unfortunately, I had a prior commitment and wasn’t able to go.
My closest friend was the one with the light blue 110 that that turned his track rod into an x² function on the trail…..twice.

If you haven't done so recently, change the MAF unit. lf that fails you won't know (no warning lights and it still runs fine)
But the ECU defaults to a preset map and MPG drops 10-20%.

Also l would agree with the above. 70mph is too fast, at 60 mph my TD5 110 did 25mpg. (UK gallons)



At 70mph the engine was turning at 3,000 rpm and economy dropped to 20mpg


At a steady 50mph during a Spanish road trip l managed 32mpg

So it's all about the speed. And check your MAF unit. There's no real test for a faulty MAF. Some say you can disconnect it and see if the engine runs any different. But that never had any discernible effect on mine, even with a new genuine LR MAF unit fitted.

Some really good insight.


I will defineitly check the MAF - I was actually reading about a diagnosis process on Empires site. Waiting for that Nanocom to come in - status says it has shipped. Hoping to have some info to post shortly.


In the meantime agreed about speed v mileage compelety, though I still believe I should be getting (slightly better).

My reasoning for the Disco Tcase and Stage 1 is more so for driveability, but would be nice if I end up doing longer highway drives.

I was looking at Alive's site and unfortunatly it looks like they currently do not support tuning through Nanocom due to Nanocoms latest update..... Ideally would like to not purchase yet another piece of hardware. So we shall see. Stay tuned!!
