Glow plug replacement
I've had a, code for a, few months for No2glow plug.. I checked and the meter confirmed one plug was duff for thought I'd get on with replacing them all..
Read it's a right pita, and it didn't disappoint 🤣
So much to remove just to get at them..

And the plug in No3 cylinder didn't want to come out.. An hour or more with release oil and lube and even when I was pretty sure the threads, were disengaged it still fought and felt close to snapping😭
It was still fighting at this stage..

Another little bit of info..
It said No2 plug was faulty.. When I got them all out and checked it was cyl No3 plug.. (the awkward one) that was duff, so the code obviously relates to the firing order and not the cul No..
I spent a bit more and bought bosh branded plugs and they came in authentic looking boxes, but I did notice they have no markings on the body like the ones I removed🤔

and another question Very Happy
in the first photo you can see the egr system pipe( the carboned up bit with holes in it ) that protrudes into the inlet manifold...if you have a non functioning egr system do you think that could be removed from the intake pipe...it seems to serve no useful purpose other than restrict air flow..maybe someone has already done that...be interested in views on that

No one any views on that egr pipe?

Well I've spent time cleaning up the inlet manifold and ports.. Whoever thought it was a good idea to feed exhaust gases back into the engine🤔😩😂..
A fair amount of carbon cleaned out..

Again just for info.. The map sensor must have been close to blocking.. The sensor itself is fine but where the communicating passage enters the inlet manifold it was just about blocked.. About an 1/8inck of carbon covering it.. The little crescent shaped port is where it enters the manifold.. A picture of the cleaned up psssage where it enters the manifold👍

And while I was doing the glow plugs I thought I'd check the compression..
A relative compression test using a current clamp looked OK on the face of it..

But a pressure transducer shows I have a lower compression in number 2cyl compared to the other

I turned a plug on the lathe and removed the egr pipe. See if I can find a pic

Not sure these days compression is done with a cold engine. As well, diesel engines used to use compressed air for engine compression (or leaks). I may be outdated to.

Ayway, I do not see how to perform a warm engine compression by the time it takes to remove the glow plugs. Perhaps using a dummy injector would be bit faster. Puma 110" SW

Thanks.. That's an option.. I was going to try and leave the hardware in place.. But I'll see.. For now I'm just going to blank the pipe off.. And I'll be removing the manifold I referred to above that sits across the inlet manifold intake. 👍

All back together now.. A little issue with the inertia switch which I'd been using while doing the compression tests.. And I replaced the starter motor while I had easy access👍 there were a few times during cranking it just stopped, and whilst it may have been another issue I decided that I'd do it anyway..
Cooling system to flush and refill once I'm sure everything is working as it should.. There are so many hose clips to do it's easy to miss one🤣

I'll add this in here as I'd posted pictures of my in cylinder compression tests earlier..
This isn't my work, but someone who is a deal handier than me 👍😂
He sent me files of my in cylinder pressure tests overlaid..
First picture is the overall view of the traces overlaid.. The second is a zoomed view of one of the events..
I thought it was clever👍 and was impressed with the capability... Not so impressed with the performance of my no2cylinder😩😂😂

Well I had to have a go.. And after mucking about for the morning I got there and managed to do my own overlays as I'd been shown.. Given I have no IT skill I'm quite chuffed👍🤣
And I changed the trace colours just to prove it wasn't a repost of his trace🤣🤣

Depends on the user, but I would not be worried about #2 and I would test it again in 50kkm or so. Or you can try with the engine at near running temp.


You could eventually squirt a bit of oil through the glow plug hole into the cylinder walls and see if the pressure increase. If yes, then is cylinder/rings wear, otherwise it is a valve thing according to common mechanic knowledge etc.

Thanks.. That is what I'll do.. The glow plugs on these engines are a right carry on to access, so it's likely going to be a relative compression test, and any further tests based on how that goes..
I could use a pressure transducer or maybe a pulse sensor in the intake and exhaust and look for any anomalies, to help give a clue about the loss..
I tried the oil down the plug port at the time and it didn't change anything..
As I said, all is back together now, and it appears to be running well..
There was a little puff of smoke at start up, and I've noticed that has gone.. I'm putting that down to the replacement of a defective glow plug👍
