If the V5 shows it as class M1 it will be higher tax, if it shows as class N1 it will be the lower tax

So just for closure I have had a conversation with the dvla who tell me its going to be £330 per year.

I’m intrigued by the comments about ex-police vehicles being in a different/cheaper tax category - is this across the board? Not heard of that before.
Mine’s not a Puma, so I’m naughtily in the wrong thread, but mines an M1 and I ‘thought’ I was in a cheaper tax bracket than others - is that a year thing rather than a model thing? |

It’s nothing to do with being ex police. The early puma’s Were classed as M1, the later Puma’s were categorised as N1 to allow them to meet changes in EU regulations (they were less stringent on N1 class vehicles ). That way they could still be produced and sold in the UK/ EU up until production ceased. This was agreed between JLR and the UK / EU bodies at the time.

N1 is HT, PU and HCPU. (Commercial).

Way back in Series time, many (most?) Police LWB Station Wagons were 12-seaters, classed as buses, and didn't incur the then Purchase Tax. I know - I bought a brand new 12-seater 2.6 petrol for £1,595. The rules changed, and one was obliged to either buy a 12-seater fitted with tacho (amd all the restrictions that went with it) or a 10-seater or whatever and pay Purchase Tax. Land Rover prices rocketed, and I was able to sell mine nearly four years later with a high mileage for £1,600. Peter |

Back then LR offered both 10 and 12 seat station wagons because of the licencing and classification differences. As I recall the difference was whether the rearmost seating had bench seats (supposedly 3 per side) or individual seats (2 per side). Nothing to do specifically with being Police or not.
