Wheel bearing advice

So, noticed what could be described as the gentle sign of a trapped stone in the brakes, but after a day it was still there and had increased in sound. I have now confirmed the wheel bearing has gone, the give away is the slight wobble and grinding metal sound!

It is in for the bearing replacement, cost £230 all in, which I think is reasonable. I am running over sized tyres picture below 😍

Question is: should I replace them as a pair? They have done 80k now and no service or maintenance paperwork, which is very full, showing them being done. It is the front drivers side. No other wheel is showing any play, grinding or sounds.

For those looking to check it is best to jack her up and give the wheel a slow spin, out of gear, with the handbrake on!

Assuming by "pair" you mean both sides of the vehicle, not necessary. Replace when worn.

If by "pair" you mean inner and outer in the same hub, then yes, definitely!

You can buy a wheel bearing kit for £16 (britparts) or OEM £40, timken most likely. Since you have a jack, in the time it takes you to drop off and pick up the car you can change the bearings yourself (using YouTube as your guild) and keep £200 in the pocket AND you woudl know what bearings were fitted.

Just sayin..

Yes, sorry I wasn’t very clear. Pair as in fronts and rears. I was sceptical of my own suggestion. It’s just the pain of not having the vehicle as it is my daily driver!

Although now knowing what the defender bearing ‘tell’ is wrt the sound it should buy me more time to get it sorted, hopefully by my self next time,

Thanks TexasRover. I need to build up a bit more tools and confidence before I try this level of repair. Also having a spare car would help….The defender is my daily and the only back up is my wife’s car. If I started the job and couldn't finish for some reason (error, tools or parts) I would be in the dog house for sure!
