It makes you drive faster.
I found that I was approaching corners quicker. On the positive side it tows better and is less of a chore to drive. The performance gains seem to bigger when motorway driving. Overtaking is surprisingly quick for a 110 with roof rack and 285muds on |

Does the map affect fuel consumption (for better or worse) at all?

I invested in the IRB remap fitted locally by Town & Country Land Rover, and found it much more responsive with better fuel economy. Haven’t found any negative yet Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

The theoretical saving in fuel that the map gives you tends to be negated by more exuberant use of the loud pedal! |

Insurance costs potentially go up and there is a reduced pool of companies that will insure you.

Fuel is better if driven sensibly. Not so good with a lead foot or heavy trailer. 450 sensible on a full tank 250miles from a full tank in a 110 fully loaded fully loaded triple axle cattle trailer at 60 most of the way. Yikes

Mine (2008 2.4) has been remapped (J E Motorworks) for about 10 years and 100k miles. I still have vivid memories of the sluggish performance that I have left behind. I've never really been conscious of any downside. I've not replaced any significant engine or drivetrain components during that time, from which I infer (not perhaps very scientifically) that the remap has not drastically increased wear or stress, within the parameters of my use and driving style.
I would certainly agree that the resulting temptation is more to drive assertively than to drive economically. |

Absolutely, and it’s not just remaps and Defenders. Despite being a black belt 12th Dan in man maths I have never made a performance upgrade to any vehicle that has resulted in better MPG. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |
