I just cleared it with SWMBO and got clearance to buy and install the brackets for safety's sake.
Unfortunately the local dealers here don't really care about the Legendary units anymore and just push the new ones. |

So here I am again, having had the second booking for the bracket recall deferred, I have just got back from a JLR dealer in Worcester, who has also declined to fit the brackets.
It seems as though my long-haul chassis replacement has struck again! (see my previous posts regarding the replacement galvanised chassis... Having today done a 112 mile round trip, paid for lunch out, six hours later I am back at square one. Apparently, the N706 recall brackets could not be fitted as the bolts that hold them that go through the radius arms. have been put in with the bolts facing the wrong direction. As I don't have another Defender to hand to look at, I'm unsure which way round they should be. For the dealer to fit the brackets, they said that the bolts would have to come out & be reversed. That will take more time than the allotted 12 minutes that JLR allow. I was given the option of paying for that, at £110, but they couldn't do it today, I would need to bring it back. (Another 112 miles & a further day gone). I asked why they couldn't do it whilst the vehicle was there, & apart from the time-scale, they are not allowed to do anything that requires more work or parts, under the recall warranty. It would be a separate job: 1: Reverse the bolts, Charge £110. 2:new job, remove nuts & fit brackets... Not at the same time? Needless to say I'm not going back there, so failure from a second dealer. The only option open to me appears to be for me to reverse the bolts, then try & find a third dealer to do the recall. This is the only way I can see forward that will get the required JLR outstanding recall cleared. Bearing in mind that I originally purchased the 110 from the Worcester dealer, you would have thought that they might have been more helpful! So please can someone post a picture of the front axle, showing which way the nuts should be orientated, as it would appear that when the chassis was replaced the bolts were put in the wrong way round. Thanks, that's how my near-side bolt is orientated...
So is the other side the reverse, i.e. the bolt head is on the inside, & the threaded end towards the wheel? |

Fell out with that dealer in 2000 when they were in Droitwich & they damaged my wifes brand new Freelander and didn't give a toss - staff will have changed attitude hasn't.
Visited them on the new site to look at a new Freelander 2 in 2007 - they said they were on such tight margins they wouldn't throw in a teddy bear for my 10 year old daughter, they couldn't believe that I walked away! After all of the messing about you've had to do, have you considered either a new case or a second hand reinforced one? |

Remember that there are 2 bolts per side, one infront and one behind the axle. All 4 bolts should be with the heads on the inside, and nuts towards the wheels. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

My question to Listers in Droitwich now is, why didn't they say it was only the one bolt that was incorrectly orientated?!! I've wasted a whole day again, just because some incompetent engineer can't be bothered to reverse a bolt, & wants to make me book a new job, & charge £110.for the privilege?!! I shall get back to them... |

And all of this is for a safety critical defect that could kill somebody in the wrong circumstances.
It just goes to show how concerned about the problem they are, both the dealer and JLR. |
