Stolen Recovered Land Rover 90 immobilizer system
Hi all, I have just purchased my first defender a 2012 Land Rover defender that was stolen then recovered. I was able to start it with the screwdriver it came with. I have both the original alarm fobs and I have fitted a new ignition as the old one was smashed.
The immobilizer seemed to disabled when using just the screwdriver the AMR4897 coil receiver was just floating around loose.
When putting power to the car is it does not make a sound but the hazards do flash on the dash and the electric locks appear to have been disabled.

Today I tried starting it with the new ignition and the AMR4897 coil receiver back on the lock but the fobs were in my pocket and it would start for a second and die. Does anyone know roughly what I need to do to have the security system back up and running how it should. The AMR4897 coil confused me in that the car was starting with it off the barrel using just a screwdriver

Many thanks in advance (As this is security related I am happy to chat privately)

Hi, the fobs are supposed to be on the keyring, close to the transponder coil.
Having fobs in your pocket could be the problem.
If it started with the fobs in your pocket when the coil was hanging loose, then it may have been receiving a better signal, not shielded by the steering column and lock.

Hope that fixes your problem. I would have thought it wouldn't start at all if that's the case, but it's the easiest thing to try and fix.

Another thing to try.
Only have one fob in range of the transponder, keep the other at least 2 metres away. 2 Fobs may be interfering with each other.

I suspect that you question is not an easy one to answer helpfully, and it may not be possible without seeing the vehicle. In essence, you need to figure out what the thieves did when they nicked the vehicle and then put it right.

If it was stolen without the keys, then simply knocking off the ignition key lock is not enough on its own to start the vehicle and drive it away - other actions must have been taken to disable the immobiliser. There are various things that could have been done (which it would be incredibly foolish to list on a public forum) depending on the skill and experience of the thieves, but only a close examination and systematic fault-finding is likely to determine what was done to your vehicle.

The transponder coil, when working properly and with the passive immobiliser operational, will generally be quite happy if the key fob is anywhere in the cab of the vehicle, it actually doesn't need to be as close as people think, and this is the reason why having to fobs in the car can cause problems.

Many thanks all I was able to get it running using the emergency code, it appears they put the immobilizer in to a basic mode where only the key is needed so some programming is now needed to get it all back up and running I have not found anyone local with a nanocom yet but will keep looking.

I am looking at fitting a BBUS which wont be easy as they have not been made for sometime and I am unsure on which part numbers will fit my vehicle for a 2012 defender 90 xs
