Steering wheel
Hi all,

Looking to replace by factory fitted Defender with something smaller (looking at MOMO) but wanted to know whether this is something that can be done without the need for a trained mechanic. I have done bits and bobs to my Defender but nothing mechanical (don't feel too comfortable modding anything that might affect the steering Embarassed )

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

Stephen

Hello stephan123

Well worth considering as many on here will endorse the move to a smaller wheel
beyond the visual change, to free up room in a 'tight cabin area'.

Probably very achievable to DIY yourself also.

First thing to do is to check if you have either a 36 or 48 Spline Steering Column
Then choose your Wheel and Boss (the element that attaches the Wheel to the Column
if the Boss you have, wont work with the Steering Wheel you want).

http://www.web-rover.co.uk/articles-steeringwheels.html

It might be worth considering (at this point) a quick release Boss / Mechanism, which will allow
you to remove the Steering Wheel (in a few seconds...1-2) when you want too. One very good level
of security in my opinion.

To remove your wheel is (probably) very simple, (depending on what you have fitted)
Post some Pictures... Thumbs Up

Align the road wheels facing forward, probably, pop out the center plastic disc, undo the 22mm Nut
with a Socket.

A 'trick' is to loosen the Nut but not take it off, sit in the vehicle, knees behind Wheel,
Grab on also and 'snatch / pull' it forward...with the Nut on it wont come flying off.

If you can also scratch the position of the Boss against a corresponding spline so that if you use the
same Boss, you get it back in the same place (setting up the Steering Wheel in correct position).

Have a Search on here for 'Small Steering Wheel' / 'Quick Release Mechanism' (Snap Off)
you will have lots to read... Exclamation

Good Luck SKIP

Many thanks SKIP, I have a 2015 Defender so will make sure to pick a wheel with 48 spline, will also change the boss (like the idea of quick release), I suspect changing the boos is more fiddly than the actual steering wheel....

Hi stephan123, i was in a similar boat to yourself (could I do it?), but took the plunge yesterday and fitted a momo jet wheel with the TMD Slimline boss (not quick release). Including a bit of youtube, reading this forum and some procrastination, it still took me less than an hour to do. Very happy with the result, makes my 110 much easier to manoeuvre, less arm twirling.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your feedback. Wanted to ask whether downsizing the wheel makes the steering any heavier? I suspect it probably does but the difference is only negligible...

Just fitted a 350mm Momo jet today on my 90. I had to use a bearing puller to get my old wheel off, it was well solid on there. I was fortunate that I could borrow one from a friend in a garage. The smaller wheel gives more knee room, and you definitely feel it is more compact, but I got used to it within the afternoon. A nice change to the standard wheel which I didn't really have any gripe about anyway. If yours comes off easily, then yes, it is no problem for you to change yourself. I am going to be listing a couple of bosses and a snap off in the for sale section within a day or two if you don't have the stuff already.

I think it is a little heavier, however the extra elbow room and the fact your moving your arms less seems to compensate. I certainly don't find it too heavy. That said it's a 2012 tdci. I guess older vehicles might have less powerful power steering.

If you want more room in the driving seat there are a number of things you can do.

Seat rails allow seats to go further back by up to 50mm. Most seat rails raise front and back by 30mm. Our low seat rails allows 50mm movement further back, lifts rear of seat by 30mm and front by 5mm alowing an extra 25mm between seat and steering wheel.

Smaller steering wheel helps.

With the Raid steering wheel you can get a smaller steering wheel PLUS an eccentric ring which will move the steering wheel 10mm upwards so more leg room OR move steering wheel 10 mm inboard so more elbow room. However does move steering wheel further away from headlight switch etc. I managed with my short stumpy fingers ok.

We might also have something else up our sleeves Whistle Whistle

@Brendan

How does the eccentric ring work? If it is offset from centre, as you rotate the wheel at some point does the rim not move 10mm closer to you leg, then the window, then the roof etc etc? Phil

No the steering wheel turns through the normal 360 degree circle.

Not sure if eccentric is best expression to describe it. Clever bit of design/engineering. We have one fitted and whilst giving slightly more elbow room I have not noticed any issues with it.

The difficulty is that what works for one person may not necessary work with someone else.

For instance our low rise seat rails raise the back of the seat by 30mm and the front by 5mm.

Some people do not like their backside being raised by +25mm compared to the front. Now I like it as I had pressure from seat under my thighs. Bum raised by 25mm compared to the front solved that issue for me.

Intriguing...should I pause my search for a new steering wheel pending what falls out of your sleeve?

As a bit of a mechanical numpty myself, I worried about fitting a new steering wheel, but after some advice from the forum it is very easy! X4SKP report above is brilliant. Basic tools required just a 22mm socket and torqued up to 43Nm (all from memory). The loosening of the nut but not removal is a good tip to save you smacking yourself in the face trying to pull it off. Mine actually wasn't too difficult to remove.

The only problem I have now is the indicators used to cancel but no longer do. Think I'm going to have to remove again and have a look.

The smaller wheel is just lovely, much easier to get in and out and feels lovely I also prefer the feel of driving with the smaller wheel too but it is a little heavier a low speed, but nothing significant. The quick release is another layer of security Thumbs Up

Hello JOW240725

Well done...hold fire on the removal of your wheel (nice... you went down the same route as me).
My Indicators didn't self cancel either, and I fixed it, I'll show you what I did in a follow up post. SKIP

Hi X4SKP, thank you!

I bought it second hand from MCMA1 and it came off his cancelling indicators and went straight on mine, so in theory should just work but doesn't.... so very interested in your next post, thank you Thumbs Up James
