Having experienced some fairly significant transmission backlash, I pulled my "new to me" 90 apart today to check on the condition of the drive flanges and was horrified to find both front shaft ends like this -
![]() Click image to enlarge Once I cleaned it all out, I found there is a lot of wear on both the shaft and flange, the rear ones were no better. It's easy enough to replace the rear halfshafts, they just slide out from the diff, however the front ones appear to be integral with the CV joint and in behind the hub, so how much stuff needs to come off to get them out? Also, where's the best place to get decent replacements? |

![]() Bad news is you need to split the swivels to get the front half shaft out (not too difficult, take top and bottom swivel pins out then remove and hang up out the way being careful not to damage the brake lines) I have never replaced a short halfshaft though - I have a feeling they are circlipped into the Cv but unsure on where. I'm sure someone else will be able to provide more detailed guidance. As far as parts go Ashcrofts are held in high esteem for there halfshafts - not sure how they compare to genuine Land Rover in price though. Ether would be fine for use. As far as drive flanges go I recently used Bearmach ones on my rear axle and was very happy with the fit - Nice and tight! I would recommend degreasing them and then painting them before you put them on as mine the paint seems to have fallen of in the first 2 weeks of being on there which makes them look untidy. I did a write up of my rear ones if its any help to you? http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic28138-105.html Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter ![]() |

No you don't! You just need to remove the stub axle. In essence do the following, 1. Remove roadwheel 2. Unbolt caliper and hang aside, taking care not to damage the hose. If it's the first time they've come off you'll have to slot the bracket on the top swivel pin to release the pipe (obvious what needs doing when you look) 3. Remove drive flange 4. Remove hub from stub axle 5. Withdraw halfshaft and CV joint assembly. |

Might be worth getting new flanges first and try on shaft before jumping in and getting new shafts as well ( that front one might be a bit passed it
![]() Normally when any splined shaft wears it the outer that wears more then inner |

Both front ones are definitely well past it
![]() The "teeth" of the splines are worn to points with steps on the sides where they locate on the flange, the original flat topped profile still shows either side, the flanges are worn even more. For what it's worth and for peace of mind, I'm going to replace the shafts and flanges on all four corners, I've just ordered all the bits from Steve at Advanced Factors. Hopefully it will be a better drive afterwards ![]() |

Must be honest I'd be welding the backs up and changing the fronts when they were totally knackered if it was mine. Get your moneys worth out of them. You'll be doing them again before you know it so get every last mile out of them......

To be honest, I don't really fancy taking a chance on one of them letting go while I'm out and about and leaving me stranded.
Considering they've already done 130 odd thousand miles over 11 years with little or no maintenance, I don't feel too hard done by ![]() |

The thing with a Defender is that if one goes when you're out and about then you can still get home with the magic little gearknob. Put the centre difflock in and hey presto back into motion again.
It can be a little un-nerving when you've just pulled across a busy main road at a crossroads and one lets go, having the prescence of mind to put it in difflock is not allways there when you can see an artic lorry getting closer and closer ![]() |

^^^ By the time it happens for the fourth time (two diffs, and two drive flanges) it becomes instinct!
