Side bars not covered by warranty?
That's the line taken by the warranty manager after I commented about the flaking powder coating and ally corrosion appearing on the side bars on my 110. Steve.

Is it an accessory and under 12 months old?
If you paid for it, it should be guaranteed?

In which case he needs to read -

Note that only genuine Land Rover accessories fitted by a Land Rover dealer/Authorised Repairer, within 1 month or 1000 miles/1600 km (whichever occurs first) of the handover of a new vehicle will benefit from the same warranty terms and period of cover as the new vehicle warranty.

1 set of XS side bars/steps replaced under warranty + 2sets of front mudflaps. Rear mudflaps have been modified by myself so not eligible . No problems with warranty. LANDYWATCH

Question Question None!....Nearly five years old and not a speck of rust. May be due to the regular spraying with WD40 perhaps. Question Question

Other stuff......

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and Land Rover has tried just that with the quality on certain items, as they are cr4p. Headlight bezels, sidesteps, front bumper, window hinge blocks, mud flap brackets, OEM A-bar brackets and wing mirror arms to name but a few. In my experience swapping out under warranty is just a 'sticking plaster fix' and the problem will undoubtedly reoccur sooner or later. I have either purchased quality after-market items or had the offending items removed and either chemically cleaned or blasted and a decent powder coating carried out for reasonable cost. (For example only £20 for a steering guard and A-bar brackets). Attention to detail is in my opinion what the Land Rover Quality Department lacks (if indeed there is such a department) and an eagle-eyed owner is much better placed to achieve the required standard of finish expected. For me I feel I am finally getting there after three years of ownership ironing out the minor issues myself. Thumbs Up

Latest set will be the third, front set replaced last year under warranty. Mine have rusted despite being sprayed with Dinitrol, no matter what you put on them they are likely to rust and flake due to the poor adhesion of the powder coating and of course the same applies to a lot of other bits too. Steve.

An update as I collected my 110 this morning...

Spoke to Land Rover Customer services yesterday, informed them of the corrosion issue regarding the side bars and that the dealer was saying that as an accessory they were not covered under warranty. I explained that from my POV that as far as I am aware as an XS the bars are standard factory fitment. They said they would speak to dealer and get back to me.

Picked the vehicle up this morning all is well and nicely valeted. Sales have looked at it as requested and at some point are going to let me have a p/ex price against a new one. All the warranty fixes I asked for have been done [usual stuff, headlamp bezels, rear screen, door bolts etc etc] but the screen frame and bumper not done as the bodyshop busy but will be done in the next couple of weeks. Rusting side bars still in place, apparently warranty manager is still sticking to the not covered under warranty line.

Speaking to workshop supervisor about jobs done I mentioned the steps and he agreed that they were rusting and took photos of them to send the LR to support my claim.

Got back, vehicle fine, had lunch and the phone rings - LR customer services lady launches into the "they are an accessory so not covered". I explain my position again, that I am also aware of others having had the same parts replaced under warranty, that I had too had new ones under warranty on a previous vehicle and that the workshop supervisor has photos of corrosion available. She said that she would be in touch with dealer for photos and to discuss further and will get back to me.

I phone workshop chap who says he has just come off the phone to the LR lady.

....to be continued. Steve.

Sounds like you are having usual warranty fun, if their excuse is they are an accessory, then as per Ian's post above an link to LR site you are covered anyway.

Cheers

Steve

It is beyond me that everyone has the same rust issues which it seems that LR always try to get out of. Yet they know unless you take them to court there is little you can do other than scream and shout. Why they do not sort out the quality at production level is beyond me.

Not in my case they haven't..... Dealership 'attitude' varies vastly and it's like a postcode lottery. Must be said though with the two dealerships I used to use (one in Wiltshire the other in Dorset) whilst under warranty I had all my bits swapped out with no quibbles whatsoever.

I received a further call from the same lady at LRCS late yesterday afternoon saying that she had not received the photos yet and as she is off work Monday she will phone me again on Tuesday. Steve.

Another call from the Land Rover Customer Services lady to say she had received the photos from the dealer but as she knows nothing about the parts she has referred them on to the people that do. Once judgement has been passed she will call me back. Steve.
