The casing shown with the hole in is just a empty pipe style casing, it protects the output shaft and of course lets the transfer case fit to the rear of the gearbox.
From memory this hole mentioned in my defender also, the oil could be from the box of the transfer case seal when they have put the imput shaft it. They are supposed to change the output seal on the transfer case when fitting the new gear and if they havent it may be damaged. It could also be a new seal and when they fitted the gear they heated it up to much for the fitting and that has damaged the seal. either way im sure they will sort it. Pete,
you're only completely right again. like you say the hole should be there...there's another one on the bell housing. regards gaskets - when they replaced the input shaft they mentioned something to do with a replacement 'flange' and it being some new fix? like you say they'll sort.......I'll let you know how I get on. Merry Christmas all. |

I would think its the seal shown as number 4 or the one in the transfer case which is not shown in this picture.

I'm just hoping they sort it.....
the big question is do you think this (whatever this is) could be the route of my problems for the last 2 years.... I've always thought lack of power, rattling (which I always thought was engine pinking / fuel starvation) was an engine issue however I'm now convinced the problems all lie somewhere between the engine top end and the diff ![]() the new clutch and input shaft definately improved things for a short while however it didn't put things back to what I would have expected to be right and before I got home tonight I was thinking there was a loss transmisson momentum in the transmission when changing gear and hence making smooth changes difficult. |

going.....from what I gather its likely to be mid Jan when I get it back. gather dealership service dept is closed until the new year so presumably by the time they get back strip down obtain parts, satisfy me that they're not puting a temp fix back together I can't see it being before at least mid Jan !
so this lra visit was 21/12/2012 for gearbox / transfer box, last lra visit for gearbox / transfer box was 27/10/2012 which resulted in car off road for 2 weeks and in between had car off road for almost 2 weeks to sort wipe motor problem. |
