SHB found me a 90 at a reasonable cost - now the bad news !

They don't offer insurance, Adrian Flux will not cover hire vehicles plus offroad and none of the temporary insurance cover companies will cover off road.

Looks like we will be relegated to navigators in seperate vehicles that don't have navigators Sad

But, as we would have done the event twice we will be looking for double the sponsorship Laughing

OK - a warning to all of you that use your 2.4 and 2.2 Defenders off road.

I am not going to give full details of what I was told by the garage as that is between myself and them and I would not like it quoted.

Basically, all the splines on the end of the main shaft of the transfer box had worn away, the area where the splines were was almost smooth, 20,000 miles on the clock. The splines are only a couple of mm deep at the most. Along with the clutch this, in my opinion, looks like another Transit part used in a Defender that is certainly not fit for purpose.

I had no warning of the failure, all perfect yesterday and failed within 2 miles of use this morning.

If this was not a warranty claim I would be looking at a £700 plus bill.

There is a very slim chance that they may get the new shaft fitted Friday but I have told them not to rush the job as it will be no use to me if they return it tomorrow and it breaks again over the weekend.

As the 2.2 has more torque low down I expect this could become a common failure.

Yeovil LR have been excellent, just a shame I have ended up in a Gaylander Big Cry

Sounds ominous..... Does anyone know how common this fault is? I have two TDCis which, excepting the caning the challenge lads must give them, get about as heavy use as any - and very heavily loaded too. I have about 60k miles on the 2008 Utility - should I be worried... ? Big Cry

regards

Ian

Steve

I am investigating. The standard puma transfer box is made of cheese. Shame the gear change was so good when it failed Laughing

It has totally put me off buying a new 2.2 90 for offroad use as I think it will be more likely to fail with the extra torque low down.

The search for a good TD5 90 HT starts again, I have found two potentials already this evening , I wonder if I can buy, insure and have one in my hands in under 24 hours Thumbs Up

Bob

Sorry for your woes - so was the transfer box the whole problem? I was expecting the Chinese gearbox to be at fault Rolling Eyes
Good luck Thumbs Up

Yes and you can change high gear ratio set (Puma high ratio = 1.211)

Sorry Matt , missed a reply to you.

It is just the transfer box that is shot.

I have always had problems with the diff lock and now wonder if this has contributed to the problem.
