2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Zambezi Silver

Which Bumperettes?

I'm going to fit some bumperettes so that next time I reverse into a Clio I only damage the Clio

I'm thinking of getting the Terrafirma ones as they will sort of match the tubular XS side step

Any thoughts?

Much nicer than the ebay cheapies, but without blowing the budget.

Galvanised & painted, looks great, comes with stainless screws. No drilling, 10 mins to fit.

Came from Brendan (aka "leeds") at 4x4 Overlander (a sponsor of the forum) - Brendan was a couple of quid cheaper than Safari Equip direct, and they were here within 48 hours

I "tested" them when I reversed into a low-down sign

in a car-park a couple of days after fitting...worth their weight in gold. Defender 1, Sign 0

Handy to stand-up on to wash the roof of the Defender as well

Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Another vote for Safari Equip, you get what you pay for and they match the XS side steps nicely with matching chequer plate

Fancy things don't look right on a Defender IMHO, it's a utilitarian truck not a chav mobile

Tested mine out also on a Fiesta two days after putting them on - Phew! (never backed into anything before either, It's fate as soon as you put them on

)

They don't show up on their website, do they still sell them?

Nothing shows up on Brendans website

If he hasn't got them you can order them directly from Safari Equip, nice bloke to chat to and deal with also

and don't forget to haggle, he's very hard to get down though, I didn't get much off, just postage I think in the end

Yes we do still sell them.

Our website is like a Defender an ongoing project! Not made any easier with internet problems. Currently using a 3G dongle as have had 3 routers in last 2 months!.

Let me know if 90, 90 with mud flaps or 110. The Safari Equip ones work with their swing away wheel carriers.

Please note that not all after market bumperettes work with wheel carriers as some are too close to rear cross member/use same bolt holes as carriers.

Safari Equip ones are 6 mm steel, galvanised and then powder coated.

The SE ones are very robust and a great bit of kit - slight word of caution though. They are galved then sprayed, not acid washed or blasted after the galv so if you get a pressure washer near them (like my LR dealer did) the paint will fly off faster than a hookers knickers. If I bought them again I'd buy a set without the chequer plate tops on and unpained, get them blasted then powder coated then rivet on the chequer tops.

Mine have been OK under the pressure washer, had them a year

Would be interesting to ask him if he is now etch priming the galv before he powder coats them! It will peel off in no time even without being pressure washed.

Powder coating sticks to mild steel better then to galv. It also prefers nicely rounded edges to square edges. I can show examples of powder coating on bare mild steel peeling off from square cut edges (not SE gear) Powder coating on bare mild steel gives a smoother finish then on galv which has more of an orange peel finish.

It is swings and roundabouts, but if powder coating does come off they will not rust.

Cost for 110 is £153 plus £12 carriage if required. 90's are slightly cheaper

Aesthetically it doesn't look great when the coating comes off in sheets though, despite not rusting. Powder coating does not stick at all well unless the surface is either blasted or significantly roughed up or etched in some way.
